The result

A narrow north-facing entry now reads as intentional rather than developer-standard. The young Dwarf Flowering Gum holds the composition as the feature, with a low, textured planting settling in beneath it and Dichondra knitting between the existing sandstone steppers. Red mulch across the bed and white pebble around the steppers define the space and keep upkeep to a minimum.

Planting strategy

The palette balances texture, flowering colour and groundcover function. White Correa (Correa alba) gives compact, rounded structure; Yellow Buttons (Chrysocephalum apiculatum ‘Silver Sunburst’) brings silver foliage and near-continuous flowering; Dichondra (Dichondra repens) knits the gaps between the steppers; and Pink Marguerite Daisy (Argyranthemum frutescens ‘Fancy Pink Posy’) carries the seasonal colour. All four are well suited to Sydney’s climate and need little beyond the establishment period.

Overview

Built to improve, not decline

Fresh garden soil went in across the whole bed first, giving the planting what the original compacted fill couldn’t — a foundation for long-term health rather than a season of looking presentable. The full palette was then laid out on site before anything went in the ground. It’s an easy step to skip, but it’s what gets the spacing, rhythm and final read right.

A low-maintenance entry garden designed to improve as it establishes.

New builds across the Lower North Shore often arrive with developer planting that looks fine at handover but wasn’t chosen to last: species picked for price over performance, minimal soil preparation, no support for establishment. Within a season the garden tires, and the new owners are left wondering what went wrong.

This Willoughby townhouse was a typical case — a narrow north-facing front bed on shallow construction fill, with a young Dwarf Flowering Gum (Corymbia ficifolia ‘Summer Beauty’) and some basic strappy planting. The brief was a complete softscaping upgrade to match the quality of the building.
