The result

A rear courtyard that hosted the client’s wedding under a mature Brown Pine canopy. Dark boundary walls make every leaf read clearly, ring planters carry trailing tropical growth up the walls, and a layered shade understorey sits on a polished black pebble dressing with Dwarf Mondo as the ground plane. It looks lived in because it is — the product of five years of care rather than a single weekend’s effort.

Planting strategy

The palette was chosen for shade tolerance and visual impact in the dappled light under the Podocarpus elatus canopy. Wall planters, installed in 2021, hold trailing climbers — Ficus pumila ‘Icecap’, Monstera lechleriana, Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brasil’ and Epipremnum varieties. The 2025 understorey layers Calathea makoyana and Calathea ornata‘Freddy’, Spathiphyllum ‘Sensation’, Monstera deliciosa, Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’, red Anthurium and Dracaena, with Dwarf Mondo Grass knitting the ground plane beneath.

Overview

A courtyard shaped by relationship as much as design.

The property came to us in 2020 through a family referral, and the work unfolded in phases: regular horticultural maintenance, periodic softscaping additions, and finally a considered replanting ahead of the wedding. Bondi’s sandy coastal soils are nutrient-poor and hold little organic matter, so the beds were topped up with soil biology throughout — keeping the system productive without overcomplicating it.

The garden had strong bones from the outset: a mature Brown Pine canopy along the rear boundary, a sheltered courtyard microclimate, dark-painted brick walls and an artificial lawn. What it needed was consistency — a planting approach suited to deep shade and lean soil, and someone to keep it moving forward year on year.

The most significant phase came in 2025. With the wedding as the deadline, the back bed was amended, dressed in polished black pebble, and planted out as a full tropical understorey — the moment five years of groundwork paid off.
